Pigmentation Removal
What is pigmentation and how does laser work?
The second and lower layer of skin, called our dermis, is responsible for giving us our pigment called melanin. When overstimulated, it can cause excess pigmentation.
The overstimulation of melanin can be caused by excess sun exposure and/or hormonal changes and certain medications. This is the brown discolouration some see on the cheeks, chin, forehead and upper lip.
Sun exposure is the number one cause of pigmentation, as it’s sunlight that triggers the production of melanin in the first place. Melanin acts as your skin’s natural sunscreen by protecting you from harmful UV rays, which is why people tan in the sun, but excessive sun exposure can disrupt this process, leading to hyper pigmentation.
Hormonal influences are the main cause of a kind of hyper pigmentation known as melasma or chloasma. It’s particularly common among women, as it’s thought to occur when the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone stimulate the overproduction of melanin when skin is exposed to the sun.
Here at Major Laser, we offer pigment-reduction treatments that can rejuvenate the skin’s appearance. We target superficial pigment and dermal pigment whilst reversing the visible signs of sun damage and ageing.

What to expect during treatment?
Treatment is non invasive with minimal downtime, whatever area you have chosen for your removal will be cleaned and prepared for treatment, eye protection is provided and treatment can take up to an hour depending on the size of the treatment area.
(Smaller areas can take as little as 10 minutes)
How does laser pigmentation removal feel?
The sensation feels like a very mild sting and is easily tolerated, the skin can feel warm from the heat of the laser.
What is expected after treatment?
Immediately after treatment skin will feel warm and is usually red, this subsides within an hour or two depending on the sensitivity of your skin. The pigmentation will appear darker over the next 1 - 2 weeks until it naturally flakes off.
After treatment you will be provided with aftercare instructions and within a week, your usual skin care routine can be continued.
How many sessions are needed?
We recommend 2-6 sessions for optimal results, however everyone's skin is different and reacts differently to treatment and so you may need more treatments if you are hoping for a more extreme reduction or the pigmentation is more prominent.
Noticeable differences will be clear after each treatment, laser treatment also improves the signs of ageing as well as reducing pigmentation.
